About the recording

SOUNZfine CDs feature significant works by established New Zealand composers performed by outstanding ensembles and performers and are accompanied by notes about each composer and the work.

Volume 5 was funded by the New Zealand Composing Women’s Network and features music by women composers written between 1993 and 2001. It offers music for various ensembles including orchestra, chamber and electroacoustic taken from a range of commercial CDs and recordings by RNZ Concert. My work Tom’s Serenade for Ann Morris comes from an RNZ Concert recording of a performance by the Ensemble Philharmonia.

Performers

In 2004 I was invited to present a concert of my music in Jakarta. Tūhonohono, a flexible group of 7 Māori and Pākehā musicians, was formed for that occasion. ‘Tūhonohono’ translates as ‘to bring together, to weave, to join, to support’, hence ‘weaving together the strands of Māori and European musical traditions.’

The musicians are Ben Hoadley (bassoon), Ingrid Culliford (flute), Alexa Still (flute), Richard Nunns (taonga pūoro), Ashley Brown (cello) Ramonda Te Maiharoa Taleni (mezzo-soprano) and Aroha Yates-Smith (kaikaranga).
